Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly was the 2009 Asian champion and is a six-time Indian champion. Ganguly became a a GM at 19 (at the 35th Chess Olympiad, Bled ., 2002). He was part of the team of seconds that assisted Anand in winning the World Championships in 2008, 2010, and 2012 against Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov, and Gelfand, respectively. He received the Arjuna Award in 2005, and was awarded the Khel Samman in 2013, and the Bangabhusan in 2015.
